At the Chalkface is an accessible and practical guide to theory and practice in language teaching. It comprises edited articles from the British Council’s respected Newsletter, produced in Portugal for secondary-school teachers of English, with other articles newly commissioned. There are four sections:

• Oral Lessons, including articles on the presentation, practice and production stages.
• The Listening, Reading and Writing Skills, with articles on individual and integrated skills.
• Achievement Testing, with actual test material for elementary, intermediate and advanced levels.
• Other Areas, including vocabulary, homework, choosing a textbook.
